Depuis 2007, Jo Ractliffe explore à travers la photographie les traces laissées par la guerre en Angola. Elle écrit : « Pour la majorité des Sud-Africains, l’Angola représentait un ailleurs lointain, la frontière, d’où revenaient frères et compagnons, envoyés là-bas pour leur service militaire. Aujourd’hui, plus de vingt ans après l’indépendance de la Namibie et le retrait des troupes de la SADF, cette guerre des frontières reste entourée d’un voile d’ignorance, de malaise, parfois même d’un sentiment de trahison. Lors de la création de As Terras do Fim do Mundo, une question a émergé : des traces de ce conflit existent-elles encore au sein même de l’Afrique du Sud ? L’idée d’un paysage imprégné par la mémoire militaire m’a alors interpellée. Mais plutôt que de m’attacher aux lieux institutionnels de l’armée, j’ai voulu explorer des espaces étroitement liés à cette guerre, d’une manière plus diffuse. »


Ractliffe a ainsi photographié trois lieux emblématiques : Pomfret, Kimberley (incluant Schmidtsdrift et Platfontein), et Riemvasmaak. Ces sites, autrefois occupés par la SADF, portent aussi les marques d’un passé de violence et de dépossession durant l’apartheid, mais aussi d’efforts de réconciliation depuis l’avènement de la démocratie. Ce sont ces couches d’histoires imbriquées, passées et présentes, qui nourrissent la démarche de l’artiste.


L’ouvrage, élégamment relié et imprimé avec soin, comprend également un texte poétique, issu d’un échange approfondi entre Jo Ractliffe et l’autrice et universitaire Patricia Hayes, dont la transcription a été finement éditée.

Shipping

Pick up

The free pick up of your order at the bookstore is available upon presentation of an identity document. Any order not collected from the shop within one month of payment will be automatically refunded.

Shipping fees

Shipping costs are calculated based on the chosen carrier, the weight and the delivery address of your package. Once your order is in your cart, you can have an estimate of the shipping costs offered by each transport service.

Return

Retraction possible within 7 days from receiving the order. The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. Returned books must be in perfect condition. The bookstore reserves the right to refuse reimbursement of the books if this shouldn't be the case.
