Cette fin du monde nous aura quand même donné de beaux couchers de soleil est le titre du premier ouvrage de Julien Gester qui compile une série de diptyques produits tout autour du monde et sur plusieurs années. Entre documentaire et contemplatif, les images du photographe aux teintes particulières sont accompagnées de deux textes de l'autrice Jakuta Alikazovic. Publiée par Actes Sud, cette édition inaugure une nouvelle série au format zine dédié à la jeune création.

À l'occasion de la sortie de son livre, Julien Gester sera en signature à la librairie du BAL accompagné de Jakuta Alikavazovic.

Rencontre & Signature

Comment évoquer le drame d'un conflit qui est paradoxalement invisibilisé par la saturation d'images médiatiques ? À travers rencontres et témoignages avec des exilés syriens, en rassemblant de rares images emportées par ceux-ci dans la fuite de leur pays, le photographe Alexis Cordesse a construit Talashi, un travail au long cours qui témoigne avec justesse de la mémoire de ses vies déracinées. Scènes du quotidien, de fêtes, d'amour et de famille, le projet déploie une lecture hors champ du conflit, à travers les souvenirs de ceux qui l'ont vécu.

À l'occasion de la sortie du livre aux éditions Atelier EXB, le photographe présentera le projet et sera en discussion au BAL avec Florian Ebner, conservateur en chef du cabinet de la photographie au Centre Pompidou. La rencontre sera suivie d'une signature du livre à la librairie.

Mother's Therapy: Mathias de Lattre

Published by The Eriskay Connection, Mathias de Lattre's first book, Mother's Therapy, compiles over ten years of research made all over the world, on the use of hallucinogenic mushrooms in a therapeutic setting. Mostly documentary, the series also reveals a more intimate side, as the photographer initially started this work in order to find an alternative to his mother's psychiatric treatment. Mathias de Lattre will be present at bookstore to present and sign this new encompassing work.

Cadavre exquis: Pauline Hisbacq & Marie Quéau

Launch of the fanzine

Created by Pauline Hisbacq and Marie Quéau, "Cadavre exquis" was an installation made by the two photographers during the Rolling Paper Book Fair in 2018, and which took the opposite view of the surrealist game of the same name. In collaboration with September Books, the bookstore of LE BAL is now co-publishing a fanzine in memory of this ephemeral exhibition. Join us for the launch of this new publication (and a glass of wine) in the presence of the two artists.

Independent Publishing Fair

Launched in 2017 by LE BAL Books and dedicated to photography and independent publishing, the ROLLING PAPER book fair returns to LE BAL. This third edition continues to broaden the field of photographic publishing proposals through new formats of presentation and installation : concert, performance, book market, conferences, signatures and scheduled launches.

WALL / PAPER is a recurring project which showcases independent books, photographers and publishers through installations in the outdoor window of the gallery space. The first edition of WALL / PAPER is dedicated to the work of french photographer Grégoire Eloy, The Fault, published by RVB Books.

LE BAL Books is the bookstore of LE BAL, a Paris-based exhibition center dedicated to the contemporary image in all its forms. Specialised in photography, the store carries more than 2000 references of artistic works linked to the image and young creation, including self-published, rare books, fanzines and limited editions. LE BAL Books also organizes a yearly program of book signings and events as well as the independent book fair Rolling Paper.

The bookshop of LE BAL and its programming are handled by Emilie Lauriola (Head of department) & Chloë Rebmann (Bookstore program manager).
