"Les Carnets du BAL" 's collection aims to explore the stakes of the contemporary image and to apprehend the notion of visual "document" in all its diversity. Each subject is addressed through theoretical contributions, presentations and analyses of works by renowned artists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and critics, based on examples chosen from the fields of photography, video and cinema.

Asking ourselves “what can an image do?” is first to avoid answering "nothing" or "everything". Between disenchanted posture and excessive belief in the efficiency of images, thirteen contributors come to deliver us their answer through various disciplines such as cinema, painting, philosophy, photography, neuroscience or law, which are explored from concrete cases. What images can really do and how do they intervene in our ways of seeing and thinking? We will go from the videos used by Commander Massoud as a tool of military strategy, to the painting as an experience of the immaterial in Caravaggio, passing by Chris Marker's cinematographic montage to the portraits reconstructed by the experts of Josef Mengele's face-skull. Editorial director of Dork Zabunyan.

This title of the collection is the subject of a new co-publication between LE BAL, Éditions Textuel and Le Centre national des arts plastiques.

Les Carnets du BAL #4 is based on the seminar entitled "What can an image do?" which, at the initiative of the BAL, was held on October 29 and 30, 2012 at the EHESS, in Paris.
