"Les Carnets du BAL" 's collection aims to explore the stakes of the contemporary image and to apprehend the notion of visual "document" in all its diversity. Each subject is addressed through theoretical contributions, presentations and analyses of works by renowned artists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and critics, based on examples chosen from the fields of photography, video and cinema.

« Can we declare that "images are missing or even likely to be missing"? We must distinguish between several types of missing images: those that never existed, those that existed but are no longer available, those that met too many obstacles to be taken or recorded and those that our collective memory has not retained. Fifteen unpublished contributions gathered here analyze the effects of these missing images, the emptiness that they reveal or the imagination that they provoke. » - Dork Zabunyan, editorial director fo Les Carnets du BAL #3.

Les Carnets du BAL #3 is based on the seminar entitled "Les Images manquantes", which, at the initiative of the BAL, was held on October 24 and 25, 2011 at the EHESS, in Paris. This new title of the collection is the subject of a new co-publication between LE BAL, Images en manœuvres éditions and the Centre national des arts plastiques.
