"Les Carnets du BAL" 's collection aims to explore the stakes of the contemporary image and to apprehend the notion of visual "document" in all its diversity. Each subject is addressed through theoretical contributions, presentations and analyses of works by renowned artists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and critics, based on examples chosen from the fields of photography, video and cinema.

"The history of photography is also the story of its proliferation, of its progressive accession to a quasi-ubiquity thanks to the means of technical reproduction on which the press and advertising based their efficiency. From then on, it was inevitable that the photographic image, as well as the moving image, would become a material available for other images, other uses: photography, cinema and video have thus given rise to multiple operations that emphasize their character as objects, and not just as media. The twelve unpublished contributions gathered here offer an overview of these practices, which in themselves constitute a parallel history of art and images in the modern and contemporary era." - Jean-Pierre Criqui, editorial director of Les Carnets du BAL #2.

Les Carnets du BAL #2 is based in part on the seminar entitled "L'Image déjà là", which, at the initiative of the BAL, was held on November 2 and 3, 2010 at the EHESS, in Paris. This title of the collection "Les Carnets du BAL" is the subject of a new co-publication between LE BAL, Images en manœuvres editions and the Centre national des arts plastiques.
