La Bête, a modern tale

Artist: Yasmina Benabderrahmane

Author: Adrien Genoudet

Publishers: LE BAL - Mack Books

« For me, images, like reality, have to remain an enigma. A not insignificant enigma » -Yasmina Benabderrahmane.

Co-published by Mack Books and LE BAL, La Bête, a modern tale by Yasmina Benabderrahmane is the first book of the young french artist.

This book, composed solely of photograms from her film work, in black and white and in colour, plunges the reader into the heart of the project carried out by Yasmina Benabderrahmane in Morocco between 2012 and 2019. Between metaphor and raw fragments, the different protagonists of this visual tale - the Uncle, the Grandmother and the Beast - emerge throughout the pages. From these familiar spaces and bodies, where the thwarted history of contemporary Morocco is played out, Yasmina Benabderrahmane seeks to approach the details and materials, the hands that shape and reproduce, through the ages, the same gestures.

Texts by Adrien Genoudet come to dialogue with the images, adding an extra voice to this polyphonic tale. An interview with the artist, conducted by Adrien Genoudet, completes the book.
