Kintsugi

Artist: Joan Fontcuberta

Publisher: Editorial RM

A beautiful publication on the survival of the image, very much apart from the rest of the photographer’s works and books.

In the beautiful and quite abstract book Kintsugi, Joan Fontcuberta brings together a poetic and conceptual set of fantastical images that evoke the passage of time, the recording of history and the very substance of photography. The photographer searches museum collections and their archives to find photographic documents which have deteriorated over time and which, paradoxically, have "lost their memory". These images are saved by a process reminiscent of the Zen technique of Kintsugi, where a broken piece of pottery is not thrown away, but repaired, a gold thread marking the line of fracture. The focus on scars is here a form of resilience.

Known for a practice that questions the value of the image through photomontage, or the falsification of documents, he envisions here a reflection on the survival of photography. Published by RM, this very beautiful book in a softcover format, closed by a Japanese binding, constitutes formally a step apart in the photographer’s practice.
