Braguino or the impossible community

Artist: Clément Cogitore

Authors: Léa Bismuth - Bertrand Schefer

Publishers: LE BAL - Filigranes

“Clément Cogitore went to Braguino, a village in the middle of the Siberian taiga far from any form of human life, founded by the utopist Sacha Braguine. Tired of social life, eager to find peace and quiet, Braguine settled in the 1970s in the forests of eastern Siberia. He will never leave the taiga and built Braguino with his hands, creating an autarkic system to accommodate his many children, far from modern civilization (those of Russian society and the community of old believers). In 2016, Clement Cogitore went to the scene to try to capture, camera-in-hand, the stakes of a living in the heart of nature and in full social, political, cultural, religious and economic independence, based on a radical and assumed choice - the dream of a man seeking freedom.” - Juliette Tyran

For the exhibition, LE BAL and Filigranes Editions co-publish Clément Cogitore - Braguino or the impossible community.

The texts by Léa Bismuth (an interview with Clément Cogitore) and Bertrand Schefer shed light on Clément Cogitore’s intentions and return to the extent of the failure of this communitarian utopia.
